According to the Hobby Industry Association, retail sales for scrapbooking industry rose from $ 400 million in 1997 to $ 2.5 billion in 2003. Although the industry continues to grow, it becomes more difficult for independent retailers to make a profit, and often the profits made by the smallest mother and pop "stores must be returned to the company. As the industry is thriving with big companies has increased.

One of the greatest competitors in the industry is the shop giant Michael's, operating 867 stores in 48 states and Canada. Consumers feel that Michael has a large inventory of supplies that are easy to find and fun for the whole family to use.

The success of independent retailers scrapbooking emphasize that it is possible to compete with the giants by being smart and planning for success. They recommend:

- Provide specialized services.

- Do not put all your eggs in one basket - offer a variety of services and products.

- Become the best at what you do.

In addition to a retail store, craft business owners should establish a strong presence on the Web. The business model should include workshops, crafts and nights of scrapbooking parties. Look for markets in your area who have not been exploited, such as minority groups or new scrapbookers.

Industry insiders insist that the scrapbooking market continues to grow and it is possible for anyone who is interested in starting a career. The best advice before starting any business is to conduct research and make the necessary preliminary. In this way, you know what you are getting into before you begin.
